We’re all going on a summer holiday 0

The places I've visited in the world.

Ruby on Rails: debugging and nil/NULL values 0

Debugging from within a view:

< %= debug(@object) %>

And from within a controller:

logger.error(@object.inspect)

Also, to insert NULL values into a MySQL table you need to receive an empty string as the form's field value, and the matching database field obviously has to allow NULL values. Rails considers an empty string to be nil, which it then translates to NULL for the database.

Not wicked: video phones 2

I've been to a few concerts recently and have a few more coming up. Something that's been pissing me off, and Mel too at Pearl Jam, is people that insist on watching the performance through their phone's camera screen.

Here's an idea, instead of filming the concert through a shitty camera-phone, watch it and enjoy it while you're there. As Mel pointed out, the same goes for playing with children. Get in amongst it and have real memories instead of filming from a distance and watching life pass you by through the viewfinder.

Biodegradable bags are great except… 0

... when you've used them to store Christmas decorations in the garden shed for two years. Then when you open the main bag your floor is filled with dandruff-like snow.

Good thing the vacuum cleaner is still out.

Time to wake up! 5

My phone has the capacity for multiple alarm clocks. It also allows for selective repetition of the alarm based on day. Maggie has hers set for 6:50AM Monday-Friday, and mine's 8:35AM Monday-Friday. Once one alarm has been triggered and dismissed the next alarm in the coming 24 hour period is "armed" and displayed on the screen.

There's a certain sense of joy that comes over me when I answer my Friday morning alarm and the phone doesn't display anything in response. I know I have 48 hours of alarm-free sleep ahead of me!
