Adobe Labs’ AJAX toolkit - Spry
Adobe Labs have released a preview of their Spry toolkit. It is yet another AJAX library, but this time the fact that it’s carrying the Adobe brand grabbed my attention. Check out their demo pages - I especially like the product listing, and will try to encorporate that into a project I’m working on at the moment.
Craaaaaap. I’m doing way better AJAX stuff than this at the moment. Shame it’s for UK govt network only :(
So does that mean you’re not using any toolkits that are publically available? If not, how big is your code (the DHTML you write, not the JS library) in comparison.
That’s what impressed me. The fact that the whole thing fits in one page of code.
Similarly done far better (not flashier but more functional) stuff for one of my projects. THe code isn’t that bloated at all really given the functionality is about 3x (as a random number) more complex the amount of code is VERY manageable.
Writing your own AJAX is really simple stuff but I find the main thing is just to not apply it EVERYWHERE because it just isn’t suitable to some things ;)
One wicked thing we do in AJAX is address verification. You input your address and it’ll pull down suggested addresses (unless yours is 100% correct, or unknown) and so that’s nice not to have to post back. Building orders for party type situations (ie multiple orders as one ‘package’ order) is also another one where lots of postbacks suck. These situations require very little code, majority is DOM manipulation which for most part is easy peasy :)
It’s wicked fun this web thing hey ? :)
BTW lovign .NET 2.0 it’s the bomb!! :)
I see. If its that little code, I wonder how cross platform it is.
We’re not using any toolkits here. Until I started here they weren’t even bothering with any abstraction. As such, there is at least 10,000 lines of IE-only Javascript. Worse, its in about 6 files - very poor design. But hey, thats what you get when you outsource everything to the cheapest bidder.
Yeah those damn cheap Pakistani coders and their cheap rates… or is that India people… i forget, either way they bug the shit outta me when they call me with their cheap telephone rates.
“Oh goodness gracious me would you like to be indulged with free mobile phone with cheap rates”.
