Spam? No way! 0

Yikes! It seems as though my invitation on DavesBJJ forums was misinterpreted as spam. I've since added a page that details how you can contribute to the site, so hopefully that helps clear up any misunderstanding.

I think I'd be really offended that someone considered me a spammer if I didn't expect that the classification has come about as a result of a lack of understanding behind the goals of a Planet-based site. It's my fault for assuming that everyone knows how Planets work... though I did list a few sample sites indicating what my intentions are with PlanetBJJ.

Heck, this whole exercise might turn out to be in vain. It may well turn out that John Will and I are the only ones writing about BJJ! ;)

Edit: Sunday April 23, 2:02AM
I met Dave and Coralie tonight at the Fight Night, and we got to talk about my plans for PlanetBJJ. I am confident that they're now more aware of what I would like the project to develop into, after having some initial doubts. I guess in this day-and-age it's not uncommon for someone to be trying to make a quick buck, but my intentions are nothing but good. But unless you know me already, I can see how it'd be doubted.

In other news, our boy Nathan Frost completely dominated in his first MMA fight. We counted about 45 seconds, which included an armbar attempt, some standup, and a mount. He took his opponent's back to finish with a rear naked choke. The feeling of being on the winning side is amazing. He did our club proud, and it's going to be great for morale. Unfortunately our other fighter withdrew earlier in the week with an injury, but I'm sure he'll showcase his skill soon.

Planet BJJ is launched 0

I've seen Jeff and Scott's "Planet" RSS feed aggregator being used by a bunch of popular open source projects and thought it might be useful in other circles.

I read John Will's 'blog and can only assume that there are others out there writing interesting things about BJJ too. I'm hoping that PlanetBJJ will provide central access to information, thoughts and views on BJJ that might otherwise slip through the cracks in the web.

So, this post serves as a bit of a "hello world" to make sure the systems are working as expected, and as an invite to anyone that's interested in including their content. I'll make a specific page about PlanetBJJ which will have information on what you need to do to contribute.

You can email me mlambie then the at symbol, then planetbjj.com - sorry for the obfuscation, blame the spammers!

Inside Man 2

Last night Maggie and I saw "Inside Man" starring Denzel Washington, Clive Own, Jodie Foster and Christopher Plumer..

The story revolves around the perfect bank robbery, which is somewhat misleading as the bank isn't robbed. Well it sort of is. Maybe.

Clive plays a methodical, intelligent bank robber and Denzel is the NYPD detective/hostage negotiator that is tasked to the case. Jodie Foster plays a "go-to" person (if you're rich and have a major problem she can make it go away for a lot of money) and Christopher Plumer plays Mr. Von Trapp. No wait, he's a banker. My mistake.

I thought it was a great movie, and the camera work was intense. Maggie complained that the soundtrack was pathetic, and once she pointed it out I tended to agree.

Kim DirectorPlus Kim Director has a great rack (and the story draws attention to it). She plays one of the many "Steve" characters (all the robbers are named some variety of "Steve" like "Stevie" or "Steve-oh") and is busting out of her painter's smock.

This shot is from Law & Order, but that's not important.

Whilst bank robberies are not new plot devices, the way this plays out is certainly entertaining. If you liked Ocean's (Eleven|Twelve) then this is for you.

Dapper deconstructed 0

It's been a day, and whilst it's not enough time to see all the differences, I thought I'd write about what I have found.

First up, it looks great. Checking back to the brown "Human" theme that Ubuntu first introduced back in October of 2004 (wow, where has the time gone?) and you can see the massive improvements. The current default theme, including the icon set, is so good that I'm using it instead of Clearlooks. The icons are a real pleasure to look at, and I prefer them to the "Tango" versions that are available. The theme is orange which is an unusual but refreshing change. Here's what I see:

Dapper is running GNOME 2.14, which many consider to be a "polish" release. There weren't too many new features or applications added to GNOME in this 6 month cycle. The developers instead focused on reducing start up times and memory usage of the main components. It seems snappier and more responsive, which on a 3 year old laptop is worth acknowledging.

With the upgrade came new versions of Firefox, Evolution, Openoffice.org and every other package. Firefox seems quicker which I obviously like, though it still times out when uploading images to Flickr (though I think that's a problem with another extension). The gnome-power-manager has been given some love and it now works a treat (suspend to RAM and hibernate to disk both work, which is a huge relief).

Having been a Linux convert for almost 2 years (that is, two years without Windows installed on any machine I own) I'm happy that I still am finding new things out about my operating system. I can see it's becoming more and more accessible for the average person, and I like that a lot.

Suspend again :) 1

It looks like the upgrade from Breezy to Dapper has fixed my software suspend on the laptop. I was hoping it would, so I'm happy.

(I seem to make a few posts about how suspend is fixed, and then it breaks, so I'm not going to hold my breath :)

Update: April 19th, 5:06PM
I've been suspending and resuming the machine all day, just for fun. As chance would have it, I came across an interesting page which among other things suggests that it might have been parameters to GRUB that was causing my suspend to fail. It would make sense, as I pass vga=834 to cause a higher resolution for tty1-tty6. Adam doesn't use this, and hasn't had the suspend/resume problems before. Interesting, thought it looks like Dapper has "fixed" it by itself.
