Reaching a certain point
For the last few weeks I've been especially enjoying my BJJ classes. Internally, I felt like I had "moved up a notch" in terms of my skills on the mat. It's the first time I've thought this, even though I graded a month back. The realization came when I was wrestling some of the newer club members and decided to play an entirely defensive game. Instead of trying to beat my opponent, I instead focussed on stopping them from beating me. When I felt like I'd "won" that game, I gave some pointers on what I'd do in their situation. Although I'm not even close to the skill level required to teach, I felt like the advice I gave was well received and we both got more out of the roll.
Interestingly, one of my friends at Jiu Jitsu (who recently graded to his blue belt) acknowledged that he could see a change in my approach on the mat, and with it an increase in my ability. It was good to have my thoughts reinforced by someone I respected.
Though, last week when wrestling one of the newer guys went <south african accent>hard and fast</south african accent> from the outset. I applied the same tactic (going slower with more focus on defense) and he wore himself out. A few fancy/acrobatic sweeps on his part was answered with what would have been an Anaconda Choke from me if we weren't just wrestling to either mount or back-control.
I guess some people are there for similar reasons as me, to learn and help others learn, while others are there to win at all costs. I find I learn much more from your losses than you do from your wins, so at this rate I'll be an expert in no time! :)
“Although I’m not even close to the skill level required to teach”
That’s not the point - you helped someone else out and in doing so, helped yourself. :) You and I have discussed this before - the best way to improve is to help others improve.
In competition situations, it means possibly giving away how you win, but that’s a good thing - it forces you to adapt and come up with *new* ways to win. :)
Well done, mate. Sounds like you’re really progressing with BJJ. You’ll be teaching me next! ;)
I’ll hit you with your own pimp. Let’s see you be defensive with that.
You must not know who I am. He must not know who I am!
I’m gonna take my prize.
Are you ready bitch?
Why are we putting all these wicked comments under this post, when there’s clearly a better one?
