Day ? - Are you alive? 4

Hello world.

We're still here, and loving Canada. So far I've had time to make single line entries on a sheet of paper, so you'll no doubt be inundated with postings in the coming future, though they shouldn't be too long ;)

I might even use this delayed posting feature to spread them our for all my lovely readers. How delightful.

Now, we're about to leave Vancouver for LA; where's Maggie?! How did I beat her back from the shoe store, assuming she did actually leave the 50% off sale ;)

Go Canucks, go!

Day 1 - Singapore 3

17/12/2005 02:48PM

Good afternoon viewers - this is Matt reporting in from humid Singapore. We've got a few hours to kill before jumping on the next plane to San Francisco, via Hong Kong so we're going to make use of this lovely free internet. The ILC would have a field day with these ergonomics; we're standing stooped over a table with the keyboard and the wrong angle and after 4 minutes my back's already hurting. Anyway...

I bought some duty free this morning (Duncan, we have a litre of Maker's Mark to devour ;) and part of a promotion running in the store was you spin a wheel and get a prize. Yeah, whatever. I spun - Major Prize! I had the choice of a few digital cameras, or a few portable CD Discman-style gadgets, and took a Sony ATRAC-enabled Discman, figuring it was worth the most :) Now I have to lug it around for a month before we can sell it on eBay, but it's a pretty good start.

The flight was so quick for me because I had the PSP to keep my entertained. I'm playing a game called "Untold Legends" (damn, I can't spawn another window to get the exact URL) which is a lot like Diablo. Good ol' hack-n-slash. I'm a level 10 knight :)

The battery on the PSP is seriously impressive, after about 2.5 hours usage it's reporting 70% full. I spent half of the time with the screen set to max brightness, and the other at min brightness, so that'll help with consumption, but regardless, I'm impressed. I'm going to jack in (no, not off) and steal some Singapore power to recharge that little bit of the battery that has been used though, just incase it doesn't have linear power usage...

Shout outs: Mark, can you leave a comment here with your US mobile number (including any extensions people/me will need to use)?

3 minutes remaining on the little countdown ticker, so I'm signing off. Check you all next time I get network access.

Ohh, we had Burger King for lunch - the Coke's were shit, but massive. I had a turkey double burger thingo which was tasty, but fatty. Eek - it just told me to log off, and I'm not about to lose all these wordz0rs. No time to spell check. Bye byes!

Logged back in. Note to self: shift-click opens a new window, which is the only method that hasn't been disabled.

Next Ubuntu - Dapper Drake Comments Off

On the Ubuntu wiki there's a rundown of the latest test-candidate, Dapper Flight 2.

Nothing revolutionary, but some of the changes sound very useful to me, like moveable tabs in tabbed applications. Rock on open source.

As usual, the same guarantee applies as with most open source applications; if it breaks, you get to keep both parts.

Not Wicked: inconsistent coding standards 6

You know what's very uncool? When people change coding standards throughout a section of code. I can't stand it!

I normally follow the K&R style, though I don't cry when people follow one of the other styles. K&R's guidelines are often called "the one true brace" approach, though I don't think any one particular format is much better than another.

I do cry when they use a mix of all sorts and don't have any elegance to their code.

In their defence, I think this script has been hacked on by a bunch of different people, but still, I adapt my style to match the code I'm working in if need be... so can others.

It almost makes me want to not steal their code at all ;)

For the record, this includes people that use camelCaseVariables sometimes and under_scores_elsewhere. Grr!
