Tool of the gods

Papermate Pacer CassetteWhen I was a youngin' I remember saving my pocket money for several weeks to buy a mechanical pencil. I was about 8 or 9 years old and loved drawing; at this particular time I enjoyed drawing on grid paper for some reason. I saw a stainless steel mechanical pencil in an art supply store and fell in love with the simple but elegant design. I had to have one.

And so I saved and bought it, and drew my little hand off.

I remember having it in Tech. Drawing at high school, and the cool "art" kids thought it was mint. I never saw them for sale after that one time when I bought mine.

Growing up I gave away the doodling, and the technical drawing for that matter. Now don't use a writing stick except for making notes in my notepads, which I try to do frequently.

Today at lunch I had an urge to dump my brain down onto paper, so I went a few shops down from the cafe that Adam and I were eating at to get a pen and a notepad. Low and behold, there's one silver, shiny new mechanical pencil sitting on the shelf. I knew at once I must have it.

So far I've made lists for work tasks, things I need to do outside of work, things I want to buy and most importantly, a list of the things I like and dislike about my job. I think this last list is worthy of a journal entry of its own. Stay tuned...

(sorry about the tiny picture; I've spent 30 minutes looking for a bigger one but they don't exist online! :)

Oh My God, you just read out loud a page from MY life.

I loved mechanical pencils and couldn’t get enough of them! I used toi always ask Santa for stationary for christmas (nerd) As for lists, I make them all the time. I have a ritual of writing a list before bed every night, even if I have nothing really important to put in a list I’ll make up a category.

And grid paper, I used to love grid paper, drew on it all the time! mainly 3D drawings…

I think this has spurred on a post all of my own. Thanks Matt, for taking me back to childhood for a second or two.

I looked also for a better pic but I think all of Papermates “Pacer” pencil series have been upgraded in design. “Papermate

I never liked using these “pacer” pencils as the lead is just too fine and sharp to really do any good doodling, specially for shading.

I tool as worthy as one from god surely deserves a Digital Camera snap ;)

I do agree though, I love mechanical pencils.

My Nanu gave me a mechanical pencil with my name engraved many years ago.

    Possessions like these last forever!

Ditto to the nerd squad comments of pencils that go click click and writing lists that I then ignore.

I had a Pacer for most of primary school and somehow managed to only ever use three or four leads out of the little box before having to buy more. They seemed to break a lot - maybe being left-handed didn’t help.

I sometimes used normal pencils for tech drawing though, mostly when I couldn’t be arsed changing the softer leads out of the mechanical pencil for harder ones.

i did the whole grid paper thing aswell… i went from drawing planes and cars on 1cm grid and moved up to the hardcore 1cm isometric… i too had the frosted mechanical “pacer” type… i remember it had those two little hearts on the clip thing…

Though in saying that a month or so back i just bought a Waterman fountain pen which is great to write with… though i manage to get ink all over me…
