Mags goes Open Source 10

Tomorrow, Maggie's getting a new computer. Well, it's not a new computer as such, rather a few bits I have here with a new operating system for her.

And she's getting Debian.

We talked about it, and she only needs a web browser and word processor. Firefox has that well and truly covered, and OpenOffice.org is a really great product (I know this because I've used it tonight for 5 minutes ;) The only other thing she needs to be able to do is print, which I am sure can't be too hard.

The good news about that is that if I give her a beasty machine (like my Celeron 1.7GHz or the Athlon 1.3GHz) then we can use it not only as her desktop, but as the backup server for Prime, and all the other cool stuff that comes with a Linux machine.

On the upside, I won't have to worry about viruses and worms infecting her machine, and intern my network.

I wonder how long it will be before she wants to become a Debian developer (as so many women are these days)? Not before me I hope!

Chix Dig Unix!

Westnet ups the download limit 5

Just days after I got my ADSL connected, Westnet has increased the download limit for each of their ADSL plans. Their My Account page doesn't show this change as yet, but do doubt it will follow shortly.

Fantastic - but this doesn't mean I'll be letting up on the WAIX traffic at all! :)

IRC - does it have a place again? 13

I'm interested, with the split of the Sandgate Massive and the creation of a new VP Collective, are we interested in starting up the IRC server again? This, coupled with Hale's internationality, Hoops' new-found freedom (he quit his job to go back to design!) and everyone's increasing seperation made me think it might be a good way to stay in touch.

At it's peak we had about 10 users, and it was always a good place to hang out.

The problem came when Adam and I got our laptops, but if Maggie has her own computer, I'll leave mIRC running on that, meaning we could get back on IRC.

Show of hands: who thinks it would be useful?

Calling all video camera owners 6

I've had enough of this printer at work. It's a Xerox N17 that we picked up for $90. It prints crooked now, and chews the paper causing frequent jams. We're going to have to go to town on it, and it's identical brother that lives at Sandgate and suffers the same disabilities.

Those of you that have visited our offices will known we're on the first floor, and our window looks out over the car park in the basement.

That's a two storey fall, and there's no fly-wire in the windows.

I figure, if we're going to smash it/them we should atleast get it on film. So who has a video camera and wants to make a short movie with me?

Washing machine 10

36S550L.jpgOn Saturday Maggie and myself went to Harvey Norman in City West to look at washing machines. We ended up getting a great deal, getting 40% off the ticketed price!

The machine was selling for $570, and because it's soo efficient, the Water Corporation want to give us a $150 rebate, in the form of a cheque! Tis is topped off with the fact that Steve's mates wrangled us cost price, bringing the total cost down to just $349. Good work Harvey.

It's a 5.5Kg, which is a little smaller than the 6.5Kg machine I had in Sandgate, but buying this with Maggie has really made me think about how stupid renting a washing machine and dryer was. Never again. We'd have owed it our-right in just 3 months, instead of paying for it 5 times over!

The delivery people are supposed to be dropping it off between 1:00 and 3:00PM, which leaves them half an hour.

I never thought I'd say this, but I can't wait to do some washing!

Edit: 23/08/2004 - 4:53PM
It's here, and it's about to get a hammering! I have four garbage bags worth of laundry to do.
