Sun to open the Looking Glass
Rumour has it that Sun are going to release their Project Looking Glass 3D desktop today under the GPL. The announcement is expected to come at their JavaOne Conference.
I first saw this in action earlier this year at a Sun seminar with Adam, and we were amazed. Having it open sourced would mean it could be ported to the Linux desktop quite easily. Will we see a third option compete against the popular Gnome and KDE desktops?

It happened!
Only problem is it looks NASTY.. so cluttered, and bad quality (even tho the screens are probably low resolution), but then again being a designer I like clean, sharp and just wikkid designed things, not pixellated poo!
ALso how much RAM is this monster going to use up? Plus how much time does it add to your “shuffling through for notepad” or whatever cos of all the shit house animations that it may have to click notepad, animate the movement from perspective into front view? thats added time to my day to flick between software, just for a wankfactor motion animation.
Personally this shit can stay on linux haha.
my guess: it showcases some awesome new stuff, turns out to be useless in the end, or too much wankfactor but cool to demo. Then windows is probably heading that way anyway to outdo them, so you’ll end up with it without a chocie :P hehe
Unfortunately yeah agree with windows heading that way..
hopefully theres a option to turn it off, just like the XP nasty blue and green task bar which, fortunately someone found a way to mod and I run a nice theme over it.
if the 3D computing ended up like from that movie the one with Tom Cruise, I forget the name of it that future one (shows you the movie wasnt that important to me haha), where its controlled by finger and arm movements now thats a good 3d interface. but probably have sore arms from moving them about a bit.
I think you’re talking about Minority Report. I loved that interface.
yeah thats the one.. thats a cool interface.
I notice on Neowin with regard to the same article you have here about the sun interface people are saying the same thing about what I said.
Sun have a HUGE setup at Networld+Interop for the Sun Jave Desktop - i will take some photos for you (thought I will avoid the booth babes cos i know how you hate them).
